Stand Up, Yumi Chung!
Eek, I haven't posted since May! Blogger just updated so hopefully I can format my website better too! Anyway, his time I'm going to "review" a new realistic fiction book by Jessica Kim.
Yumi, an eleven-year-old Korean American girl, wants to be a stand-up comedian. But her parents, who own a Korean BBQ restaurant in Koreatown, disapprove of her love of comedy. They think she should be more focused on school and studying, like Yumi's genius sister, Yuri. So when Yumi discovers a comedy summer camp, taught by her favorite YouTuber, it seems like the perfect opportunity to practice her comedy without her parents watching. But her parents don't want her to do the camp, and suddenly Yumi's caught in an identity mistake, with the camp leader and all of the kids thinking she's a girl named Kay Nakamura. And when the Korean BBQ restaurant starts to lose customers, Yumi feels like her world is unraveling. How can Yumi save the restaurant, tell the camp who she really is, and prove to her parents that her comedy is worth fighting for?
Whew, that's one of the first times I've actually written the summary. Fun. Anyways, this book is amazing: full of friendship, comedy, Asian American girl power (yay!), and Korean food (the most important part, obviously). Seriously, you can't read this book without getting hungry.
